Dr. Gerald S. Gurney
Gerald S. Gurney, Ph.D. (1951-2022) retired in 2022 as Professor Emeritus of Academic Affairs at the University of Oklahoma where he was Senior Associate Athletic Director for Academics and Student Life from 1993-2011. Prior, Gerald was Associate Athletic Director for Academic Support and Compliance at the University of Maryland-College Park, Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Affairs at Southern Methodist University, Athletic Academic Counselor at Iowa State University, and Academic Adviser at Grinnell College. Gerald’s professional expertise included critical issues in intercollegiate athletics such as impact on higher education, academic support, athletics, reform, and ethics in athletics. He authored or co-authored approximately 40 publications including Unwinding Madness: What Went Wrong with College Sports and How to Fix It and gave more than 30 major presentations including serving on a US Senate panel on academic integrity in college sports in 2019. He also appeared in the following documentaries: Schooled: The Price of College Sports (EPIX), Gaming the System (HBO), and Dropping the Ball: The Shady Side of Big-Time College Sports (SiriusXM and NPR). Gerald received awards from The Drake Group for which he was a past president, the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development (N4A) for which he was a past president, Japan Association for College and University Education (JACUE), the Oklahoma Psychological Association, Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of Oklahoma, and the Mental Health Association for Oklahoma County.
Dr. Gurney’s senior leadership roles in athletics academic support and compliance included time at Iowa State University, Southern Methodist University (SMU), The University of Maryland at College Park, and the University of Oklahoma. He served as president of the National Association of Academic Advisers for Athletics (N4A) (2010-2011) and winner of the Lan Hewlett Award—the N4A’s highest honor. Dr. Gurney also served as president of The Drake Group (2014-2016). Throughout his career, Dr. Gurney worked directly with well-known celebrity coaches (e.g., Bob Stoops, Mack Brown, Mike Leach, Bobby Collins, Mark Mangino, Kevin Sumlin, Kelvin Sampson, etc). He also worked directly with thousands of athletes such as Heisman winners Sam Bradford and Jason White, and many other great athletes including Blake Griffin, Adrian Peterson, and Josh Heupel.
